Notice of Intent to Become a Candidate (Registration)


While there is no initial date when you may begin campaigning or announce your intention to run, no candidate may accept campaign contributions, including the funds of the candidate, unless the candidate is registered under the Local Authorities Election Act with the municipality in which the candidate intends to run. (LAEA s.147.21)

If you have decided that you are running in the 2017 Municipal Election and must or would like to declare your intent to run, you must complete the following forms and have them commissioned at City Hall: 

Candidates who are not planning on accepting campaign donations are not required to register but may do so if they wish. 

Nomination Day

Regardless of whether you have announced your intention to run or registered, to become a candidate for the 2017 Chestermere Election, nomination papers must be filed on Nomination Day. Late Nominations will not be accepted.

The nomination package must include:

Before you file your nomination papers, you must read sections 12, 21, 22, 27, 47, 68.1, 147.11, 147.2, 147.21 and 151 of the Local Authorities Election Act. The Act is available online at www.chestermere.ca/laea    

It is highly recommended that the candidate files nomination papers in person. However, candidates may send a designate to file their nomination form with the Returning Officer on Nomination Day. Signatures from at least 10 eligible electors as well as the candidate’s signature must be in their original form. 

*Deposit Information: The $250 must be provided at the time nomination papers are filed. It may be provided in cash, money order or certified cheque payable to the City of Chestermere.

Your deposit will be returned to you if:

  • You are elected,
  • You withdraw your nomination within 24 hours of filing, OR
  • You receive at least half the number of votes as the candidate elected in your race with the least number of votes.
