Chestermere Water Festival on July 16 will be cancelled due to forecasted inclement weather. Cancellation includes fireworks and all other activities such as wakeboarding.
According to Environment Canada, Chestermere is scheduled to have thunderstorms on Friday, July 15 and Saturday, July 16.
“With the potential of a lot of rain on Friday, it would be very difficult to set up for the event. Everything is outside: the music stage, beer gardens and of course the wakeboard competition, and thunderstorms would be unpleasant and dangerous for our guests,” said City of Chestermere Events Planner, Nancie Huneault.
Cancelling this signature event was an extremely hard decision to make; the City of Chestermere carefully considered its options and determined that the risk to people’s safety was too high.
Given that vendors and performers are booked for the event, the City of Chestermere had to make a decision regarding cancellation on Thursday, July 14 by noon. As the weather is unpredictable, the decision to cancel was made with the best possible information available at the time.
"We are so disappointed to learn that Water Festival needs to be cancelled this year. While our entire community looks forward to this event it is vitally important that no one is put at risk with the expected thunderstorms," said Mayor Patricia Matthews.
