Development Permit Process

Development Permits for Commercial Businesses:

For those opening a commercial premise in a commercial facility or purchasing land to build a commercial facility:

  1. Visit Development Services at City Hall, call (403) 207-7075, or email planning@chestermere.ca  and provide details about your business and desired location(s) to determine:
    • If your business is a permitted, discretionary or non-permitted use at that location(s),
    • the permits you will be required to obtain;
  2. If your business is a permitted use at your desired location or you are comfortable with the process as a discretionary use, you can secure your location.
    • Note: If your proposed location is considered a discretionary use, there is a more extensive process and waiting period to determine whether your business will be allowed at that location.  You may want to consider reserving the location or placing a caveat on any lease or purchase that says “subject to municipal approval”;
  3. Begin the process of completing the permit applications;
  4. Once your location is finalized and your permits have been approved, you may begin  advertising;
  5. Obtain a business license before opening your doors to customers;
  6. Open your business.

For those opening a home based businesses:

    • If your business is a permitted, discretionary or non-permitted use at those locations,
    • the permits you will be required to obtain;
  2. Fill out the permit applications;
  3. Obtain a business license once the permits are approved;
  4. Open your home-based business.
Note: There are two business license options for home-based businesses. A Major Home-Based business typically has clients or customers parking at the home and/or entering the home. A Minor Home-Based Business is typically a home-office that will not service clients or customers on the premises.
