Notice of Bylaw - Voter Identification Bylaw #004-21

 

Council will be considering the approval of the Voter Identification Bylaw at the March 16, 2021 Regular Meeting of Council. 


The proposed Voter Identification Bylaw provides for the number and types of identification required to be produced by a person to verify their name and address for the purpose of determining their eligibility to vote in the municipal election.

In accordance with the proposed Bylaw, there are three options to provide identification:

  • Option 1: provide one piece of government-issued identification which contains a photograph of the elector and the elector’s legal name and current address (i.e. driver’s license, etc.);
  • Option 2: provide two pieces of identification that contain the elector’s name and at least one containing the elector’s current address, as seen in Schedule A of the proposed Bylaw (i.e. credit card statement, utility bill, mortgage statement, etc.); or
  • Option 3: provide a letter or form (attestation) that contains the elector’s legal name and current address, as seen in Schedule A of the proposed Bylaw (i.e. authorized representative of a post-secondary institution, authorized representative of a supportive living facility or treatment centre, etc.).

To submit a petition in accordance with Section 231 of the Municipal Government Act:

  • Electors may submit a petition for a vote of the electors to determine whether the proposed bylaw should be passed. A petition must be submitted to the Chief Administrative Officer within 15 days after the last date on which the proposed bylaw or resolution is advertised. A petition must be signed by electors of the municipality equal in number to at least 10 percent of the population. 

Further conditions of the petition are described in Section 224 of the Municipal Government Act.
