Hello Lake News Subscribers,

Thank you for taking our short survey last month. We took your feedback and will continue to send out this monthly newsletter throughout the winter season. We will also be making this newsletter available to the general public so if you know someone who is interested in receiving this information who doesn’t currently live on the lake, they can now subscribe here.

Invasive Species Prevention

Flowering Rush

• The Flowering Rush hand removal initiative conducted by City staff and volunteers two weeks ago removed over 2580 kg of flowering rush in and around the canal inlet.
• Thank you to volunteers who helped with on-site removal as well as those who removed this plant from around the residential properties 

Winter Events

Western Canada Pond Hockey Championship

• This event will be hosted again on Chestermere Lake the tournament organizers and supported by the City of Chestermere. 
• The festivities will run from December 27^th to 29^th, 2021 (weather dependent). 
• The City’s Parks and Recreation Team will create 14 rinks for the tournament in front of The Landing. These rinks will available for general public use before and after the tournament.

Safety

• As we head into colder weather and start thinking about recreating on the ice, it is critical that your check lake ice measurements before you go out. The City’s Parks Team will begin checking depths once the ice begins to freeze and at that time you will find ice depths posted on our website weekly. https://www.chestermere.ca/1129/Lake-Ice-Measurements

We will be featuring a different lake activity each month you may consider trying!

Snowmobiling

You’ll see many residents and visitors cruising on the ice on ATV’s and snowmobiles on a crisp winter day. If you’re interested in doing the same, remember that the only authorized public access point for off highway vehicles (OHV) onto the Lake in the winter is the boat launch, located at John Peake Park (100 John Morris Way). Before you hit the ice, remember safety first, be sure to wear a helmet and watch your speed! Also, keep an eye out for other Lake users, like those walking, skating or skiing and ensure you keep a safe distance. 

What you need to get started:

• Alberta Transportation Requirements:
• You need to be 14 years of age or older to drive a off-highway vehicle in Alberta
• Helmet
• OHV registration
• Insurance coverage
• A way to transport the OHV to the Lake (ex. trailer) because you can’t drive them on the streets or through City parks
