Statement from the Mayor - Response to March 20, 2022 Calgary Herald Article

A statement from Mayor Jeff Colvin:

The Calgary Herald news released a story on March 20th, 2022 regarding an unauthorized leaked release of a Municipal Affairs preliminary review letter of Chestermere operations. The article also quotes three other leaked confidential council only emails. The City is aware that Municipal Affairs did receive some resident’s letters of concern regarding the actions of the current council however this is a misrepresentation of the restructuring, transparency, production, and efficiency model the current council has in process.

Transparency is never a bad thing. This preliminary review will confirm to residents that we are working above board, which simply reaffirms our objectives for Chestermere families.  It is of no surprise that Chestermere has long been under the microscope for alleged wrong doings in past municipal projects, as well as other financial irregularities, some of which date back to more than a decade.

Which is the main reason I ran for Mayor, to clean up Chestermere and turn it around, to offer more to residents and families. To this point, there are a number of investigations being conducted by the new city council of Chestermere. The City suspects that it is a select group of people who may be directly or indirectly linked to the irregularities that the investigations may uncover that are behind the complaints to Municipal Affairs Minister Ric McIver. Currently, Minister McIver has not found any evidence that supports the few resident complaints but is doing his due diligence and conducting a preliminary review.

The City of Chestermere is adjusting to a new administration style and all departments are completing their tasks and new employees are being hired. As always, Administration and Staff will work towards accomplishing Councils’ goals, development growth and operating city requirements.

“I have stated before and I'll say it again, I became Mayor because I believe government needs to be transparent. I believe in fiscal responsibility, smart planning, and doing what's best for our residents. I'm excited for the future of Chestermere.” - Jeff Colvin, Mayor of Chestermere.
