The City of Chestermere is honoured to display the pictured historic replica of the 1917 Chestermere Red Cross Quilt. The red and white patchwork, on loan from the Chestermere Historical Foundation, now hangs in the Lighthouse Atrium boardroom on the second floor of the municipal building.
The book, Chestermere a Home for All Seasons, published in 2005, explains that women living in Chestermere created a quilt to raise funds for the WWI veterans in the area. The squares were sold and the names of the donors were embroidered onto the white rectangles. In 2014, a replica of the quilt was completed by the Lakeside Quilters Guild in partnership with the Chestermere Historical Foundation.
You can read more about both the original quilt and its replica, including a listing of all donors, on the Chestermere Historical Foundation website.
The City thanks the Chestermere Historical Foundation for sharing a piece of our local history through this beautiful installation.
